Celebrity Looks for Nostalgia: Flo Jo | Essence

Florence Griffith Joyner, aka Flo Jo, captured our hearts from the first time she stepped onto the track. This sprinter and Olympian was known for her colorful outfits, catsuits, and of course, her long, flashy nails that helped her be called one of the fastest women alive.

She is an inspiration to all, and new Olympian ShaCarey Richardson is often compared to the Los Angeles native for her long nails and flashiness on the track. Flo Jo’s most famous look was her all-white ensemble at the 1988 Olympic Trials. She ran in a beautifully tailored outfit consisting of a lace-covered white bodysuit layered with a running bra and white bottoms. She would go on to sport many more stylish and vibrant looks at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. But it was this look that made history at the Trials. Unbeknownst to her, she had won three Olympic gold medals.

In honor of the ongoing 2024 Paris Olympics, we took a trip down memory lane to reminisce about Flo Jo’s all-white outfit at the 1988 Olympic Trials in Indianapolis and think about what items we’d use to recreate it.
