Police say two people were handcuffed after 15 forklifts were stolen from a business near Doral.

Miami-Dade County, Florida Two Broward County men are facing multiple felony charges in counties across the south after Miami-Dade County police said they were among those who stole more than a dozen forklifts from a business near Doral.

Authorities arrested suspects Eddie Jean-Baptiste, 20, of Plantation, and Elijah Torrealba, 19, of Coconut Creek, on Monday.

According to a Miami-Dade Police Department arrest report, the investigation began Sunday when a maintenance worker at Forklift Parts & Equipment, located at 7695 NW 63rd St., just east of the Palmetto Expressway, noticed the main gate had been forced open.

Police said security camera footage showed two men scaling the gate and using a power saw to break the lock, before the suspects were seen taking a forklift from the store.

According to the arrest report, security camera footage showed at least five men involved and two vehicles were identified as being used in the thefts, a black Range Rover and a dark-colored BMW.

Authorities say the suspects fled with 15 forklifts valued at approximately $500,000.

As the store owner was inspecting the scene, the Range Rover pulled up and an employee was able to photograph the license plate, according to the report. The SUV was later found abandoned at Advance Auto Parts, located at 9575 NW Seventh Ave. in the unincorporated community of Pinewood, police said.

Authorities said the victim and police found several forklifts on Northwest 74th Street in Medley and when they arrived on scene, Jean-Baptiste and Torrealba arrived in a BMW.

When the pair noticed the police, they reportedly made a U-turn and sped away.

Police said they found a Yale forklift key and marijuana in Jean-Baptiste’s possession.

Hialeah police officers quickly took Torrealba into custody in handcuffs at the Exxon gas station at 6305 East 8th Street, according to the report.

Police said the suspect resisted arrest, then escaped handcuffs and fled the patrol vehicle, leading officers to again pursue him on foot. Authorities said officers then cornered the suspect, who complained of shortness of breath and medics took him to Hialeah Hospital to be evaluated.

Authorities said they found a Glock 48 handgun and nine rounds of ammunition inside the vehicle.

“Additionally, clothing identical to that used in the thefts was located inside the vehicle, both of which matched the physical description of the masked individual who stole the forklifts from Forklift Parts & Equipment,” investigators wrote in the report. “In addition, investigators located two damaged steering columns from the two stolen forklifts in plain view.”

Police said both men exercised their right to remain silent after being detained.

Both suspects are charged with first-degree burglary, masked theft, felony criminal damage to property and resisting arrest with violence.
